Contrasts of War info
In 1969 U.S. Army Medic Bob "Doc" Shirley borrowed from a buddy and purchased a small 35mm Fujica camera from the post exchange at Di An, Vietnam. Bob paid his friend back just a few days later but still feels a debt of gratitude to him to this day.
36 of Bob Shirley's original photographs are the subject of CONTRASTS OF WAR. Recording his tour of duty in Vietnam, Shirley captured both the horrors and compassion of war juxtaposing heart wrenching images of war-weary soldiers and innocent children unable to comprehend the violence all around them.
Larry Johns has skillfully woven a collection of poems and photographs that highlight the contrasts and dichotomy of war, and Shirley's uncanny ability to convey that vision.
